Young Rainbows is a peer led sexual health project for guys who like guys between the ages of 13 and 19 in and around Dorset, supported by Over the Rainbow in Bournemouth. The project is led by Michael Fanner, who successfully won funding from Young Leaders Project (Terrence Higgins Trust) back in March.
Michael explains "The project is all about equality, if you're young, gay and sexually active (or not) accessing good age and gay appropriate sexual health information is pretty much non-existant. If young straight people can have some form of decent education around sex, relationships and sexual health then so can the young gay people!".
Since the project started, Michael has been working on the new pocket size 'The Sexy Stuff' sexual health guide for young guys. The booklet is now available at Over The Rainbow or electronically via email.
The guide includes lots of useful and fun information around aspects of sexual health, as well as signposting to other services, like the new sexual health clinic at Over The Rainbow. In addition to the guide, Young Rainbows also offers chlamydia screening, free condoms and lube.
Young Rainbows has gone from gaining local interest to a national level since starting the project. Michael states "To start off with, Young Rainbows was just a small 3 month project just for the guys, but now I'm getting contacted by 'high up' people within Terrence Higgins Trust and NHS who have taken a strong interest in commissioning the project - which is really exciting! My next plan is to do the same for the girls!"
